This year, the Trust for Public Land is refining designs for a signature playground, river-front access, a 30-acre nature sanctuary, trails, gathering spaces, and much more. Story Mill Community Park is our chance to leave a legacy that embodies Bozeman’s community spirit and celebrates our beautiful, shared outdoor spaces. It’s why someone who may never visit Yellowstone can wonder at its unique and valuable existence. Famed conservationist Aldo Leopold wrote that “the weeds in a city lot convey the same lesson as the redwoods.” Whether we’re on a daily dog walk or scrambling on a jungle gym, a close-to-home park is where we learn the importance of open public spaces. Parks are prime contributors to a community’s quality of life. More than 20 local groups, from the Northeast Neighborhood Association to the Sacajawea Audubon chapter, have committed volunteers to the effort. Hundreds of our neighbors, friends, area business owners, and other community members have written letters of support, testified to the City Commission, completed surveys, and attended design workshops. Since 2012, the Trust for Public Land has been working to create Story Mill Community Park, a 55-acre city park in the shadows of the iconic Story Mill granaries.

Our inspiring mountains and rivers, the small-town quality of Main Street, and the interesting and innovative people that live here all contribute to the nebulous, warm feeling of “home.” Much of what makes Bozeman special is a gift from our remarkable natural setting and previous community leaders, but now this generation of Bozemanites has a one-of-a-kind opportunity to make Bozeman an even better place to live. Selection Process & Criteria: A committee headed by TPL staff and comprised of a volunteer artist, a historian, a faculty member from the Montana State University art department, and a community member will utilize a pre-determined scoring criteria to judge the selections on the quality and comprehensiveness of the submission package as it relates to, and demonstrates, creativity, artistic merit, conceptual innovation, design, and compatibility with the Story Mill Community Park project.Most of us who call Bozeman home, either by birth or choice, have a deep sense of how special this place is. One design concept submission per artist please. This creative placemaking project is partially supported through a National Endowment for the Arts ‘Our Town’ grant.Įligibility: Applicants should have demonstrated experience in creating art or art elements for public spaces. The City has contracted with TPL to design and construct the park. TPL is leading the development of Story Mill Community Park through a community-inspired design process that celebrates the values of Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley.Ĭity of Bozeman owns the land and will assume long-term management and maintenance of the Story Mill Community Park including ownership of the art element. The Trust for Public Land (TPL)’s Parks for People-Northern Rockies Program, located in Bozeman, MT, works with communities to help create parks.

Submissions should include concept description and conceptual plan drawing or some type of visualization as well as a budget for design, fabrication and installation not to exceed $30,000.Design considerations for durability in the Montana climate material durability, low impact and low maintenance to the environment.Preliminary Concept Design for the piece including descriptions of materiality, aesthetics, impacts on the visitor experience and the relationship to water as a shared community resource.Resume and work samples demonstrating quality and relevance of artist’s past work.Artist’s Statement of Interest to create an installation that engages park visitors and is inspired by the site’s natural and cultural qualities through the lens of rivers, wetlands and water resources at Story Mill Community Park.Proposals must not exceed ten single sided pages on 8.5 x 11 paper and shall include the following: Applications are accepted through the CaFE system, as well as by mail and email.
